SOME BACKGROUND

The Galetta Lawn Bowling Club’s green was established in 1992.  In May of 1998 the name of the Green was dedicated to the memory of the Donald MacHardy.  Donald was a well-known local resident who was the driving force behind the Green’s concept and construction.  In 1991 Donald and his wife Helen were visiting in Scotland and had the opportunity to try the grand old sport of lawn bowling.  On the way home, duly impressed with the sport, Donald said to Helen that we could build our own green in Galetta.  When they returned home to Galetta and Donald announced his intentions, Helen and others scoffed at the idea.  Undaunted, Donald got right to work.  He and several of his friends, including Harold Sadler whose back yard bordered on the proposed site, made it happen by spending countless days and nights developing the green as we know it today.

While the Club has only eight rinks, the club draws its membership from a broad community in the Ottawa region that extends well beyond Galetta's boundaries. The club has a very active recreational and competitive program as well as social activities throughout the season.
