Spring 2011 Issue of the Galetta Bowling Green Sheet
Welcome to the inaugural issue of the Galetta Bowling Green Sheet. This year (2011) will bring exciting new activities, new colours, hopefully new members, and new initiatives to help our members improve, enter more tournaments and just plain have fun!
The list of the current Executive is found at the Home Page
2011 Activity Schedule:
We plan to provide a Master Schedule of all the District, Provincial and Internal Tournaments on the club’s Bulletin Board. We encourage you to identify which events you, your team (or the team you plan to organize) intend to enter at the earliest opportunity, and to plan your activities accordingly. We would like to see a listing of the events the Galetta Club members plan to enter as early in the season as possible.
Some of the highlights of the season follow:
A) Season Opener: Mark 3:00 p.m., Tuesday May 17, 2011 on your calendar for our “kick-off” (“bowl-off”?) Games, Pot-Luck Dinner and meeting. Current plans include inviting the public to attend, as well.
B) Galetta Bowling Club “Open House”: We plan to advertise this event, scheduled for Wednesday, June 1, 2011, in the local papers and by roadside notice boards. Plan to be available to help convince attendees to join the club. More details at the Season Opener.
C) Skills and Etiquette Night: Don’t miss this night! Thursday, June 2nd is planned to include skills training, strategy sessions, Rules of Bowling and on-the-green etiquette guidelines.
D) Invitation Tournaments:. Our tournaments are very popular and the entries into them fill up very quickly. Six spots are reserved for Galetta teams. Get to the tournament convenors early in the year if you want an entry. Our tournaments for 2011 are:
MacHardy - Mixed Pairs - Monday, June 13, 2011Russell - Open Triples - Monday, July 4, 2011Sadler - Mixed Pairs - Monday, August 15, 2011
E) Internal Bowling Schedule:
Marathon: This year it will only occur on Tuesday nights
Open Nights: Mondays and Thursdays will be open. We have decided on a “random draw” process that will see much more variety in teams, more fun and the chance to obtain more experience. We’re sure you will enjoy the new approach!
Day Time Bowling Friday: Due to the success of the Friday daytime bowling, it was agreed to continue it in 2011. F) In-house Tournaments: We will be starting the tournaments earlier this year with more advance warning. EVERYone is encouraged to participate, regardless of your skill level! Gord Wright is planning a more comprehensive schedule and he will present the details for your consideration at the Spring Kick-off.
G) Novice Day: Galetta has been asked (and accepted) to host a District 16 “Novice Day” which provides the opportunity to practice the various skills involved in our sport. “Novices” are those newer bowlers with 5 or less years of lawn bowling. This is a great opportunity for our less experienced bowlers to meet bowlers from other clubs and to learn a bit about the game. We will need assistance from our members to help put it on and make it a success. The scheduled date is Friday, July 15, 2011. More information at the Kick-off, but please plan to either participate or help out.
